I'm laying in bed on my first night in Chicago and my social channels are flooded with two things: updates on Oregon wildfires/eclipse traffic and suggestions for combatting fascism. As a person who lives with privilege there are elements of other people's daily experiences that I do not understand... Often the best I can do is "understand" it as a concept or historical event. Most attempts to actually wrap my brain around some of these experiences end with more questions than answers; the dominant question being, "what the hell is wrong with people?!" While the PNW is often thought of as liberal and progressive it's also in a bit of a bubble and has a dark history of its own when it comes to race. This editorial shoot presented me with a challenge It was a group shoot, 3-5 models, I was already limited by the sizes of the dresses, and the location is remote - about 2 hours east of Bend. I desperately wanted to take full advantage of this opportunity and show as much diversity as possible, but not all diversity is visual so I focused my efforts on finding women of color. ...which backfired. Regardless of my intentions or what my perspective was, when I hit the "I don't want to be your token black girl wall" I had to step back and examine my behavior. As a person with privilege that is MY responsibility. How do I fix a problem that is much bigger than me? Don't fucking make it worse with naivety and ignorance. I've spent the better part of the 4 months since reflecting on what happened. I wanted to forget about the accusations and not mention it to anyone, I was embarrassed and ashamed. But burying experiences is how they take root and grown into something unexpected with they resurface. When we pretend like racism and systems of oppression don't exist they fester out of sight and come back when our communities are vulnerable. Not speaking is speaking. Not acting is acting. #resist #fightfascism . . . . . #havecamerawilltravel #intentionalwedding #loveauthentically #adventureinprogress #oregonbride #wedventuremag #styledshoot #pnwedding #nwwedding #bridalshoot #celebratelove #photoglife #letsgetmarried #easternoregon #natureofisa #storyteller
