Wedding Day Apparel: Four Nontraditional Ideas

Trends

The traditional long, white or ivory wedding dress is a classic—and for many brides, evokes imagery of sophisticated glamour. However, weddings are an expression of individuality—and what better way to make a statement than through your wedding day apparel? Here are just a few examples of how you can defy convention, and choose bridal fashions that are uniquely you.

1. The Colorful Wedding Dress

Who says that wedding dresses have to be white? Colorful wedding dresses are fresh and modern, and a sure way to make a statement (just take a look at this dramatic black wedding dress from Holly Stalder, as well as this cheery polka dot number from Elizabeth Dye of The English Dept.). If the idea of a colorful wedding dress has you feeling a bit shy, consider infusing your dress with colorful accents. A bolero in an untraditional color (see left photo, dress by Jenny Yoo, bolero by Elizabeth Dye) or a bright pair of shoes is sometimes all it takes to add a distinct allure to your wedding day look.

2. The Non-Wedding Dress

You don't always have to "think bridal" when shopping around for your big day! Depending on your taste and the overall aesthetic of your wedding, you may want to consider looking for "a dress" rather than "wedding dress"—or even a white pantsuit, for that matter. For certain occasions, such as a beach wedding, a simple sundress is the best option. Remember, this is your wedding—and one of the greatest opportunities of all to really show off your taste.

3. The Retro Wedding Dress

Go retro with a vintage dress or accessories. Weddings are a production—so why not up the glam and add a theatrical vintage element to your wedding day apparel? Scour the racks of local vintage shops (Magpie and Camellia Collection are great places to begin your search) and look through Etsy's vintage section (be sure to shop local!) Best of all, you will know that what you're wearing is likely one-of-a-kind.

4. The Short Wedding Dress

Effortlessly chic, the short wedding dress has become a popular choice for brides(see right photo, dress by Sarah Seven). Look at the collections of any wedding dress designer, and make note of the increasing number of tea-length and mini options. Short wedding dresses are, by nature, more casual—giving you room to amp it up with dramatic jewelry and accessories.
