2018 has certainly been a year of "More is more" mentality, as has been the case off and on throughout time. Extravigant trends come, then are replaced by minimalism and back and forth once again. One holdover from the last "less is more" wave has been the "Naked Cake", and we're here to say we're not over it either. Not by a long shot.
You can make up for a rustic cake facade like such by adding mulitple tiers, but why stop there? Why not mulitple standalone cakes? Picture-perfect construction of the sponge with what becomes a thick layer of buttercream by these standards, gives the impression of a gorgeous birch tree. Sparse sprigs of floral also work to brighten up this classic spread.

A happy replacement for a crumb layer: decadent bourbon caramel. The ratio of cake to buttercream on this naked layer cake is almost 1:1, which we have absolutely no problem with. Topped off with dazzling fresh fruit for added texture and style, this Foxtail Bakery confection is anything but minimalist.

A delightful addition to the average naked cake: unexpected geometric shapes. The juxtaposition of the sharp angles with a delightfully slight frost around the perimeter makes this beauty something to behold. Delicate florals garnish each side, creating a "too-pretty-to-eat" look, almost passing for another centerpiece.

A lesson in Naked Cakes of the extravagant variety. One might expect an embellished frost, topped with gold flake and piped extras; but this beautifully sparse, elegant cake fits in perfectly with the luxurious decor. A perfectly-executed baby pink drip down the side of the top tier adds the just-right flavor of whimsy that balances this scape beautifully.
