On this episode of Wedding Day Podcast, host Sonja Babich, CEO of Iron Diamond Media, and co-host Alexis Sanabria, Publisher at Iron Diamond, sat down with Troy and Heather Balliet, the husband-and-wife team behind California-based Amorology Weddings and Back Up Backdrops, to discuss the artistry, storytelling and emotional intention behind luxury wedding design. Recorded at The Havens Country Club in San Diego, the conversation explored how the duo has spent more than two decades creating immersive celebrations that feel deeply personal, visually unforgettable and emotionally resonant.

Founded by Heather in 2003 before Troy officially joined the company in 2009, Amorology Weddings has grown alongside the couple’s marriage and family life. What began during the early years of parenthood eventually evolved into a collaborative creative partnership, with Heather leading client communication and design execution while Troy oversees production, fabrication and business development. Together, they’ve built not only a luxury wedding planning company but also Back Up Backdrops, a custom fabrication and installations business complete with a 5,000-square-foot warehouse outfitted with CNC machines, laser cutters, woodworking equipment and large-format printers that allow them to bring one-of-a-kind wedding concepts to life.

Throughout the episode, the Balliets shared that their creative process always begins with understanding the couple at the center of the celebration. Rather than recreating trends or replicating designs they’ve seen elsewhere, they intentionally search for the details that make each relationship unique. From late-night brainstorming sessions to collaborative design meetings, every event is approached as an entirely original story waiting to unfold. Heather explained that the team strives to create weddings that feel emotionally connected to both the couple and the venue itself, often reimagining spaces in unexpected ways while ensuring every design element feels organically tied to its surroundings.

One of the defining themes of the conversation was the idea that weddings should be immersive experiences for guests—not simply beautiful events to observe. The Balliets described their celebrations as “love letters” to the people attending them, with thoughtful details woven into every corner of the day. Whether through interactive moments like strolling desserts delivered directly to the dance floor or through highly personalized installations and layered floral collaborations, the goal is always to create experiences that make guests feel seen, cared for and emotionally connected to the celebration unfolding around them. Their work, while visually striking, is rooted in hospitality and intentionality above all else.

The couple also reflected on the importance of collaboration within the luxury wedding industry. Heather emphasized how much joy comes from working alongside talented floral designers, production teams and vendor partners who contribute ideas that continuously elevate each event. According to the Balliets, the best celebrations happen when creative partners inspire one another and collectively push the design further than anyone originally imagined. That collaborative energy, combined with their ability to merge architecture, fabrication, florals and storytelling, has become one of the signatures that makes Amorology instantly recognizable within the wedding world.

When asked about the most rewarding part of the wedding day itself, Troy and Heather both pointed to the emotional response from their couples. After months of dreaming, planning and building, the moment a couple steps into the finished space and sees their vision fully realized remains the ultimate payoff. For the Balliets, wedding design is ultimately about translating emotion into an experience—creating something that reflects an inner world through beauty, atmosphere and meaningful details. More than 20 years into their careers, it’s still the human connection, emotional storytelling and opportunity to celebrate love that continues to inspire their work today.
